Water water everywhere! As human beings we love water. Our bodies are predominantly made up of water. For men 60-65% of our bodies is water and for women about 50-60% is from water. Our brains are made up of 85% and our bones are made up of 10-15% of water.
We enjoy being by the water by a lake, river or ocean. We enjoy listening to the soothing trickle of a stream or a brook. We indulge or should indulge in consuming at least 8 glasses of water per day to stay hydrated. Therefore, it only makes sense for us to play in the water!
Water aerobics is a great way to get exercise and have fun. There are many benefits of water aerobics. First of all it is extremely joint friendly. The impact you would receive on land from jumping is alleviated greatly by the buoyancy of the water.
The water also offers great but gentle resistance when moving and can benefit you in a
cardiovascular way. There are toys, like noodles and water dumbbells which offers even more resistance.
Another benefit of water aerobics I like best is, you automatically work opposing muscle groups. For instance, every time you lift your leg for a front kick, you engage the quadriceps, however when putting the leg back down you engage the hamstrings. Like wise if you are executing bicep curls with the dumbbells in the water, you will automatically engage the triceps during the eccentric contraction of the biceps. I feel like you get more bang for your workout! After all if we are going to workout and exercise, we might as well get the most out of it…right?!
